Millions of pounds has been spent making car seats as safe as possible, why would we not want to use them in bike trailers?

The Conker Trailer has been designed with a car seat safely attached and will remain in the safety cell in the event of an accident. We tested the trailer at Cranfield University Impact Centre, where Formula One companies go to test. We applied a force to the seat at the equivalent of a 71mph impact to ensure that the seat remained inside the safety cell even at speeds well above those ever likely to be encountered in a bike journey.

Please note: you cannot put any car seat into the Conker Trailer. The Conker Trailer comes with a Joie Bold TM car seat pre-installed for children from 9 months to 25kg

The main body and roll cage of the Conker Safety Trailer is made of aircraft-grade aluminium, durable both in regard to impact and weather. This welded aluminium is strong and light as well as readily recyclable.

The metal used is 6082 - T6 which is a high-strength aluminum alloy often used for critical structures in cars and aeroplanes. It is known for its excellent strength and corrosion resistance.

Why is this important? Because we believe that the Conker Trailer should be reusable for many years. When you no longer need it, we guarantee to buy it back from you to refurbish it for future families or to recycle it if it has (finally) reached the end of its safe lifetime.

Roll cages have been common in cars for many decades, and the concept has been a proven success in the motorsports industry, saving many lives. The Roll Cage ensures that your child will be better protected as a passenger in the event of an accident.

We have introduced this concept for the very first time, as far as we know, into the bicycle industry. Our roll cage has been tested at Cranfield Impact Centre, UK, the same place they test Formula One cars, to a load of one metric tonne.

The roll-bar and shell are manufactured in the UK using highly specialist welders and computer controlled pipe bending machinery.

The Conker Safety Trailer rain cover is made from heavy duty marine grade canvas, uses top quality zips and fastenings and is manufactured by hand in the UK. It has both waterproof windows for cold months and mesh windows for warm weather.

The rain cover is not just for comfort. When travelling on busy roads, it is not uncommon for pebbles, stones and water to be thrown up by passing cars. The rain cover helps prevent these from entering the trailer.

We consider it an essential safety item, which is why all Conker Safety Trailers have the rain cover as standard.

The comfort of your child in the trailer is clearly important, but it is also a major safety factor. A comfortable child is a safe child.

In addition to the rain cover, and to help ensure a smooth and pleasant ride, every Conker Trailer comes equipped with:

• a waterproof fabric covered foam seat support to act as a cushion against bumps in the road

• ultra strong wheels with twice the number of spokes of a normal trailer wheel ensuring a steady and stable ride

• wide tyres which can operate at a lower pressure to create a cushioning ride for the child

• a flexible trailer coupling to prevent unnecessary jolting

• closed-cell foam lining for all the walls of the shell to keep noise to a minimum, improve comfort of the passenger and help with a soft landing should the trailer ever tip over

Our founder, Crispin Sinclair, is very proud to be carrying on the family tradition of innovation in product design.

His father, Sir Clive Sinclair, was known around the world for his inventiveness and commitment to British manufacturing including the first pocket calculators, digital watch, ZX80, ZX81 and multi-million selling Spectrum computers

What is less well known is that Sir Clive was also an enthusiastic cyclist, in fact his very last invention was an electric bike which is soon to appear in the dedicated Sinclair Museum in Portugal.

Crispin continues with this legacy into the future as we try to improve the health of our nation and planet by giving more people the safety and confidence to take their children by bicycle, not in the car.

• The Conker Safety Trailer comes with:

  • specially designed mounting points for two rear lights, not just the one required by law. We also believe that lights at the rear of your trailer are much safer than one on the bicycle alone where it can be obscured by coats or luggage.

• A high-visibility flag and pole, these are an essential item in traffic to ensure vehicles can see both you and your trailer.

• Wheel reflectors on both wheels for side visibility

• Two red and two white reflectors to rear and front of the trailer

The Conker Safety Trailer Early Adopters Programme is designed for our very first customers.

We have spent eight years designing, engineering, prototyping and testing the trailer so that it is as safe as it is feasible to be. But, of course, all products can be improved, so we want to have a great communication channel open to allow us to learn where we could improve things. We want to be able to talk to our first customers and give extra special attention so that we learn as much as we can about the day-to-day use of the trailer in each family.

Practically speaking, this means that we will check in on a regular basis with customers to gather insight.
